IES Syllabus 2018 Prelims/ Mains Exam Pattern

For recruitment into branches like Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and others, Union Public Service Commission will soon organise written test, UPSC IES Admit Card 2018 will be available 15 days before. With very few weeks left, its crucial time for applicants to have a look at UPSC IES syllabus 2018 Prelims examination online. According to 27 September 2017 released notification, for 1300 total written examination marks, prelims and Mains test will be held on 7th January 2018 and 1 July 2018 respectively as per the IES exam pattern 2018. UPSC IES Syllabus 2018

For UPSC IES 2018 stage-I test, 500 marks questions will be asked for each of the four categories Category-I Civil Engineering, Category-II Mechanical Engineering, Category-III Electrical Engineering, Category-IV Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering as per the UPSC IES syllabus 2018 || Prelims exam pattern. As a part of the syllabus, questions will be from Engineering and Science Graduate standard. In UPSC IES Notification also, category wise syllabus is clearly mentioned.

  • Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools and their applications in Engineering such as networking, e-governance and technology-based education.
  • Standards and Quality practices in production, construction, maintenance and services.
  • Current issues of national and international importance relating to social, economic and industrial development.
  • Basics of Material Science and Engineering.
  • General Principles of Design, Drawing, Importance of Safety.
  • Basics of Energy and Environment: Conservation, environmental pollution and degradation, Climate Change, Environmental impact assessment.
  • Engineering Aptitude covering Logical reasoning and Analytical ability.
  • Basics of Project Management.
  • Ethics and values in the Engineering profession.
  • Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis.
Mechanical Engineering: Paper 1: Thermodynamics and Heat transfer, Power Plant Engineering, Fluid Mechanics, IC Engines, Turbo Machinery, the Renewable source of Energy etc.
Paper 2: Manufacturing, Industrial and Maintenance Engineering; Engineering Mechanics, Mechatronics and Robotics, Design of Machine Elements,  Mechanisms and Machines etc. 
Civil Engineering: Paper 1: Solid Mechanics, Design of Steel Structures, Structural Analysis, Design of Concrete and Masonry Structures, Building Materials etc.
Paper 2: Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical and Foundation Engineering, Flow of Fluids, Hydraulic Machines and Hydro Power, Environmental Engineering etc.

All papers in Stage-II (Mains/Stage-II) Examination will be of 300 Marks each and 3 hours duration. Whereas, for each category, Paper 1 of 2 hours and paper 2 of 3 hours will be conducted in Stage-I (Preliminary/Stage-I) Examination. IES Selection procedure will also include Stage-III (Personality Test), UPSC IES Result 2018 will be declared later for the prelims. It seems board has not specified any particular UPSC IES syllabus 2018 regarding personality test or interview test. Where general knowledge questions from the IES 2018 syllabus will be mainly asked in the third stage of the whole recruitment process.

Being an engineering services test, SI [Système International] units should be mentioned after writing the figures while answering questions. Note.—Candidates will be supplied with standard tables/charts in SI units in the Examination hall for reference purpose, wherever considered necessary. Also, applicants should use only International form of Indian numerals (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.) while answering question papers as per the UPSC IES syllabus 2018.
